Joseph William Cannon was born and raised in Watertown MA. He graduated from Boston College in 1953 with a master's in finance. Upon graduation, he entered the Army and was honorably discharged in 1956. Joseph then went to work for Northeast Airlines in Boston and New York as a research assistant. By the time he retired from the company, he was treasurer. He began a new job with Seaboard as treasurer. He left the airline industry in 1983 and bought the Town Crier Motel with his wife Judith.
Joseph was the husband of Judith (McKeever) Cannon. He was the father of eight children: four daughters, Cecily Santoro of East Northport, N.Y., Patricia Fokas of Huntington, N.Y., Kathleen Cannon of Watertown, and Mary Anne Cannon of Huntington, N.Y.; four sons, George H. Cannon of Rincon, Ga., Joseph W. Cannon Jr. of Eastham, John F. Cannon of Patchogue, N.Y., and the late Michael J. Cannon; and grandfather of eight, Andrew, Eileen, Michael, Joey, Maddy, Bri, Joanie and Sofia.
