Capt. Joe Halsmer is seen here in 1945 with his wife Josephine at Halsmer Airport in Indiana. Joe and his younger brothers, John and Francis, taught themselves to fly and bought the airport in 1934. The Halsmer family operated it for 54 years, until it closed in 1988. During WWII, Joe flew in the Air Transport Command. He designed and built several airplanes, including this one that could be used as an airplane or as a car. He and Josephine had 13 children. At least one of his sons and his granddaughter Elisabeth are airline pilots.
